Final Luminaire.

This entire project process was a series of ups and downs for me. I struggled through this project but I also encountered many times where I was very happy with the direction that I was headed in. Let me show you my development process.

Step One: I began making different model types to figure out how I wanted my light effect displayed. I used cardboard for my first model, just to fool around with the shape.

Step Two: I then began to mess around with materials and shapes to create light affect that I wanted.

My inspiration was light through a spiderweb.

I came up with this type of design for my light effect. The spaces where light was coming through were too big, so the shapes I was going for were not as defined as I would have liked them to be.

I finally achieved the light effect that I wanted. I like the soft glow, and how in the center of the web, it is more defined, and it starts to fade out.

So our latest assignment in studio dealt with the wood shop. Learning that we would already be dealing with heavy machinery pretty much put me straight into stress mode. We were given a 2x4 in which we were to create a system. It had to be cut at least five times, and we had to use every piece of wood that was given to us. I struggled so much with this project, but ended up having a piece I was happy with. My system is a box shape, but with a contrast between parallel and diagonal lines. Most boxes contain all parallel and perpendicular lines but I did not want mine to be like most boxes. So reading from right to left, the lines are parallel and as it progresses, the lines start to become more diagonal.

twelve sticks

Our project was to design a container for twelve sticks. With my struggle for the first project we were assigned, I had no idea how I was supposed to do this project either. The day we were assigned the project I walked along College Ave, and searched around for twelve sticks that I thought were interesting. There were these sticks that looked like little trees, with little twigs sprouting off like branches. I collected them and then spent the next day drawing them. I began to brainstorm ideas of how I was going to incorporate paper and a binding agent. The sticks that I had chosen were so delicate and fragile, I had to think of someway to incorporate paper that would not break the sticks. I decided on somehow incorporating delicate twists of paper into the sticks to somehow reflect the sticks' delicacy. I then used wire as the binding agent to contrast how fragile the sticks were. I did not put much thought into how to arrange the wire on the project so I just randomly tied the sticks together. After being critiqued, I decided to wrap the sticks in paper to create a secure feeling for the fragile sticks.  I then carefully braided the wire and then wrapped it around the sticks to have a more structured, sound container. It had the same twists as the sticks, but it made the sticks have a safer place. I was much more pleased with this project.
